The 2nd in our 9-part series focuses on our West Cork Passive House, a coastal project on an exposed site in Roaring Water Bay, West Cork, completed in 2015. Large glazed areas were carefully placed to take advantage of the spectacular views, and were provided with robust shading via overhangs. A unique plan form with large open volumes ensures that the solar gains are well distributed. An easterly window identified how solar gain needs to be controlled during the shoulder seasons. 10 years of monitoring has identified the integrated active stack ventilation to be extremely effective in our mild climate. The exhaust air heat pump utilises the excess gains effectively for hot water production. The Annual Heat Demand reflects the solar gains available, but the expansive glazing would cause discomfort further north as demonstrated by the heat load variations. BER: A1 (23.7 kWh/m2.a)
